The house
Four levels, built for the weather
BlackSands sits about three hundred feet above the sea, half a mile back from the coast — a pocket of warmer, less windy microclimate that makes a real difference on this stretch of shore.
The main living area rises to twenty-foot ceilings with huge windows onto the surrounding vegetation. Substantial concrete construction with stamped floors and radiant heating underneath is exactly what you want on a cool Lost Coast morning.
Four levels sounds like a lot until you have fourteen people in the house. Then it becomes the point: bedrooms and bunk room on one level, main living and kitchen on another, the primary suite somewhere else, and the theater far enough away that a film does not stop anyone sleeping.

Before you come
The Lost Coast is part of the adventure
Shelter Cove is not a typical California beach town, and that is exactly why people love it. But it does mean planning differently.
- The final drive is steep and winding. Take your time, especially arriving after dark.
- Arrive with groceries. Local markets and restaurants exist, but options are more limited than in a larger town.
- Fill the tank before you drop into the Cove. Fuel and services are limited.
- Download your maps. Starlink Wi-Fi is at the house, but cell service varies enormously by carrier and location.
- Layers, always. A sunny morning can turn foggy and cool, then clear again. Evenings are chilly even in summer.
- Expect wildlife: deer, foxes, seals, sea lions, whales in season, and the insects and spiders that come with forest and coastal scrub.
